Abstract

Abstract Air pollution and climate change and its catastrophic effects are already a global reality, which can also be observed in Brazil by the irregular rainfall regime and disparities in temperature seasonality, for instance. Relationships between air pollutants (PM10, PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO and O3) and health outcomes have been focused by many studies, in order to comprehend the relationship between those variables through mathematical models and health impacts. There are several studies globally analysing heat waves and weather extremes to mortality indicators. However, few studies have analysed the impacts of air pollution, GHG's emissions and meteorological variables on human health in Brazil and in Portugal.São Paulo is the largest federative unit of Brazil in economic and industrial terms. In 2021, it represented one third of country's economy. Porto is the capital of the north region of Portugal, has 231.932 inhabitants and is the 13° more dense populational area of Europe. The Metropolitan Region of Porto, which comprises 17 municipalities, has 1.5million inhabitants being the second largest metropolitan region and economic center in Portugal. Its economics activities concentrate an exportation focus and compete with Lisbon, the capital of the country and it is considered the most important city in the industrialized area of the north coast of Portugal. Therefore, this research aims to conduct the epidemiological analysis of the observational period (observed climate, air pollution, mortality and morbidity variables) for São Paulo State and for Porto Municipality from 2000 to 2022, employing models proposed in the literature and adjusting new ones. The multivariable models of literature will be applied as well as new ones to be developed in order to evaluate the association of both air pollution and GHG's emissions with meteorological variables (temperature, humidity, wind and rain) and health indicators (morbidity and mortality due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases). The results will serve to demonstrate the magnitude of the impact and to generate subsidies for public policies' development, which can mitigate the deleterious effects of air pollutants and climate change.
