Abstract

The treatment for cranial cruciate ligament injury (CrCLI) has the tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) as its main surgical technique. This procedure involves intraoperative procedures and variables that promote joint inflammation and the development of osteoarthritis, which is a limiting factor for patient recovery. In this context, the involvement of certain inflammatory cytokines in this process is already known, but their relationships with the variables in TPLO have been poorly studied. However, conducting such studies could contribute to better patient recovery. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of TPLO surgical variables on joint inflammation and the behavior of inflammatory biomarkers. For this purpose, 10 dogs with CrCLI corrected through TPLO will be evaluated pre- and post-operatively in terms of limb function, orthopedic examination, radiographic evaluation, and serum levels of the biomarkers IL-1b, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, and TNF-a. These biomarkers will be correlated with the surgical variables of TPLO, which include surgical time, arthrotomy, meniscal injury, and meniscectomy. It is expected to establish relationships between these variables and each of the joint inflammation biomarkers, as well as the influence of each biomarker on the existing inflammatory process. Specific relationships between each biomarker and the surgical aspects will be sought, enabling the establishment of specific anti-inflammatory protocols for each patient based on the performed variables.
