Abstract

The aim of this study will be to compare the dentoskeletal, periodontal and upper airway function changes produced by two rapid maxillary expansion protocols anchored in two and four mini-implants in late adolescence. Material and Methods: It will be a randomized clinical study, composed of two parallel groups, in which 30 individuals of both sexes, aged between 14 and 18 years with indication of rapid maxillary expansion will be selected. Group 1 will consist of 15 individuals treated with the hybrid expander with 2 mini-implants in the anterior region of the palate. Group 2 will consist of 15 individuals treated with an expander for MARPE with 4 palatal miniscrews. Expanders will be activated 8mm in both groups. Digital dental models and cone-beam computed tomography (CBT) will be obtained at baseline (T1) and 6 months after the active expansion phase (T2). In the frontal section of the TCCB, the widths of the maxilla, the nasal cavity and the dental arch will be measured, the distances between the palatal roots, between the buccal and palatal bone crests and the inclination of the posterior teeth and canines. To assess the impact of expansion on alveolar bone morphology, the following measurements will be taken: width and thickness of the alveolar bone crest of the upper posterior teeth. In digital dental models through superimpositions, intercanine, interpremolar and intermolar distances, perimeter and arch length will be measured. Rhinomanometry tests will be performed at T1 and T2 to assess nasal permeability, with simultaneous measurement of flow and nasal pressure. The paired t-test will be used to compare interphases, while the independent t-test will be used to compare changes between groups. A significance level of 5% will be adopted. (AU)
