Long-term clinical evaluation of ethanol-wet dentin technique: randomized clinical trial

Abstract

Purpose: This randomized clinical trial evaluated different strategies using the ethanol wet dentin technique (WDT) in comparison to the total etch three-step adhesive protocol, on the 6-year success of restorations of non carious cervical lesions. Materials and Methods: A total of 140 restorations were randomly performed by one operator. NCCLs were divided into four groups (n=35) according to the adhesive protocol, with the WDT associated withuniversal adhesive protocol, total-etch three-step adhesive protocol, or the third step (Hydrophobic adhesive) of the total-etch three-step protocol. The control group was not associated with the WDT, and followed the total-etch three-step protocol. The WDT was performed following the 100% ethanol protocol associated with Single Bond Universal (3MESPE) or the Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (3M ESPE). The standard protocol was performed using the three step Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (3M ESPE) adhesive, following the manufacturer's instructions. Restorations were polished 1 week after placement. Clinical evaluation was performed at baseline (7 days), 6, 12, and 18 months, by two calibrated examiners, according to the modified US Public Health Service criteria evaluating fractures/retention, marginal staining, marginal adaptation, recurrence of caries, anatomic form, postoperative sensitivity, and surface texture. In this study the restorations will be evaluated after 6 years of clinical use. Chi square test will be used for success and failure analysis. Survival analysis will also be performed using Kaplan Meier method (± = 0.05).
