Abstract

Novel aircrafts are being developed in recent years to satisfy the current demand for mobility, in that sense aircrafts have the challenge of be less noisy. The proposal is to model and simulate the sound radiated by propellers in the vicinity of wings, in configurations that are representative of novel aircraft. Simplified models will be developed in order to represent the dominant flow structures that result from rotating blades. The sound generation of propellers in installed configurations, in the vicinity of wings, will be obtained using acoustic calculations that solve the acoustic scattering problem. These are fast acoustic calculations that allow estimations of radiated sound with low computational cost, allowing a broad exploration of the parameters of the problem and providing guidance on the impact of design choices on propeller noise. Experimental validation of the model trends will be carried out using earlier wind tunnel tests. Some configurations of interest will be further explored in high-fidelity simulations of the flow around an installed propeller. Simulation data will allow a thorough exploration of the flow generated by an installed propeller, highlighting the physical mechanisms at play by modal decomposition techniques. (AU)
