(In)Visible Populations in medical school: mapping and experiences shared in conversation circles at an institution in the interior of São Paulo

Abstract

Universities, in particular at medical school, most people in this space are white and privileged social class, and a minor participation of (in)visible population. In this research, invisible population is defined as groups of black students, indigenous, people with disabilities, immigrants and LGBTQIAP+ people. This situation reflects a historical process accepted as a pattern and made of prejudices and racism, strengthening disparities of minorities' access to education. This context is part of an implementation of Politics of affirmative actions, created to increase minority groups at college education.In this way, this project justifies the necessity of knowing the presence of (in)visible population students at medical school, as their experience at this course. This research intends to describe the profile and analysis of the experience of medical students of Universidade Federal de São Carlos, specially (in)visible population. This is a combined study, a part quantitative, exploratory and descriptive; and qualitative, with conversation circles. The research describes and analyzes the medical students' experience, specially those who are part of (in)visible population, stimulating reflections about presence and stay at medical school, impacting the development of access strategies and permanency of these students, to strengthen public policy, of reduction of disparities and guarantee these rights.
