Abstract

This research project for an Internship Abroad (BEPE) was developed based on the Master's research Antonio Ferrigno and the Coffee Cycle in the Paintings of Museu Paulista (process n. 2022/09305-8), in progress in the Graduate Program in History of Art at the Federal University of São Paulo, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Elaine Dias. The main objective of this BEPE is to access French and Italian bibliographic sources in order to get in touch with themes similar to the six coffee paintings by Antonio Ferrigno. We seek, in France, access to the paintings and history of French artists, who served as inspiration for Italian artists throughout the 19th century, as well as the theories around landscape painting in terms of rural and social realism. In turn, the research in Italy comprises the search for sources about the study of the artistic training environment of Ferrigno, who came to Brazil in 1893, after his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. In addition to the representation of cultivation, we look for paintings that present intentions similar to those committed by Ferrigno, such as the exaltation of rural work and the dissemination of an agricultural culture, comprising this conception of the landscape in the 19th century.
