Abstract

The aim of the present prospective, randomized, split-mouth study is to evaluate the effectiveness of sealing Schneiderian membrane perforation using two types of collagenous bone substitute. Twelve adult female New Zealand White rabbits, weighing 3.5 to 4.0 kg, will be used. The maxillary sinus lift procedure will be performed bilaterally and a 4 mm perforation will be intentionally made in its center. On the control side, the maxillary sinus will be filled with a biomaterial of porcine origin in granules (OsteoBiol® mp3 Tecnoss, Giaveno, Italy). On the test side, grafting will be carried out with a porcine collagenous xenograft with a pasty characteristic of OsteoBiol® GTO (Tecnoss, Giaveno, Italy). After periods of 2 and 10 weeks, the animals will be euthanized and the pieces sent for processing and tomographic analysis using a PaX-i3D Smart SC tomograph (Vatech Global Co., Ltd - Korea). The obtained DICOM files will then be processed using the Mimics Research® 21 software (Materialise®, Materialise HQ, Leuven, Belgium) and reconstructed using 0.25mm slices, in order to investigate total graft volume (BV), graft volumetric changes bone during the experimental period and height in the central region of the graft. The values obtained will be expressed as mean ± standard deviation and the confidence interval of the differences will be calculated for each variable. Differences between groups will be evaluated using ANOVA, followed by the Wilcoxon Test, using Prism Software (GraphPad Software, LLC, San Diego, CA, USA). A significance level = 5% will be applied.
