Abstract

This proposal for an internship abroad deals with a paradigm shift in the novel genre whose manifestations can be observed in the figurative weakening of the entrepreneurial protagonist. It aims to demonstrate how the intention of conquering the world, often thematized in Realism, is replaced by the regression of desire; which becomes recurrent in its second half. To this end, the research uses a dialectical methodology, composing a panorama of the novel's transformations within the socio-historical context of the 19th century. Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Sentimental Education are analyzed at length, given that their protagonists prove to be incapable of achievements due to a lack of energy. Tiredness arises from this inappetence and lack of vigor, focusing on the effects which resulted from the main events. Therefore, this project studies tiredness in 19th century novels. For its best development, an internship at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa is proposed under the supervision of Prof. Abel Barros Baptista.
