Abstract

Until the mid-nineteenth century, all dyes were derived from plants, but with the discovery of synthetic dyes by William Henry Perkin, civilization began to replace natural dyes with synthetic ones. As the industry modernized, there was an increase in the use of artificial colorants for food, pharmaceutical and textile purposes. However, the use of synthetic colorants can be harmful both to health and the environment, inducing adverse environmental impacts. Thus, there are a number of studies aimed at the insertion of natural, sustainable and economically viable colorants, based on the use of microorganisms as a source of these biomolecules. Among microorganisms, bacteria have great potential in the production of various bioproducts, such as colorants. The production and application of bacterial dyes has been investigated by several researchers and the genus Streptomyces can be highlighted. The species S. lavendulae has the ability to convert l-glutamine into the indigoidin blue pigment, this is a natural product with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity reported in the literature. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the production of indigoidin by submerged cultivation of S. lavendulae and to analyze the antimicrobial activity of the obtained extract.
