Abstract

This research project proposes the diagnosis and formulation of a prototype database for online consultation of the João Baptista de Campos Aguirra Collection, known as the Aguirra Archive, part of the documentary collection of the Museu Paulista. This collection comprises a variety of documentary typologies about land transactions in the city of São Paulo from the colonial period to 1940. Despite being one of the most important documentary sets in the Museu Paulista collection, it has less visibility than its artworks and material culture collections. Other collections that refer to urban history in safeguarding other public institutions are also more consulted and known by the researchers. One of the objectives of this project is to set strategies for disseminating this collection that qualify its use by the holding institution and by the researchers. To achieve this objective, the prototype online database to the Aguirra Collection will be developed through a case study that supports its design, based on intensive research on the sources, to set an instrument based on the needs that arise when consulting this documentation. As a case study the performance of middle-class urban investors in the Consolação district of the capital of São Paulo between 1871 and 1929 is approached, from the survey and indexing in the Museu Paulista's software of all the documentation of the collection referring to specific places in this time frame. With this, outstanding agents in land transactions will be identified and, with the intersection with other sources, we will seek to reconstruct the networks of relationships around the investments of these agents, as they impacted the urbanization of São Paulo within a perspective of transnational flows of capital in the realignment of the strategies of bourgeois domination that followed the processes of independence and abolition in the former colonies.
