Abstract The formation of biofilm on the denture base surfaces of implant-supported prostheses is frequently observed, regardless of the choice of materials for the base. This biofilm formation can compromise the success of the rehabilitation treatments and the overall systemic health of patients. Biofilm is composed of a complex community of microorganisms enveloped within an extracellular matrix, which accumulates on both biological and non-biological surfaces. This contributes to the development of infectious conditions, such as denture stomatitis and peri-implantitis. Consequently, the use of denture base resins with antimicrobial compounds presents a promising strategy forcontrolling biofilm formation. Within this context, the proposed study aims to functionalize a 3D denture base resin with microcrystals of alpha - silver tungstate (alpha-Ag2WO4), a biocompatible material with well-described antimicrobials properties, developed by the Center for Development of Functional Materials (CDFM), one of the Research, Innovation and Diffusion Centers (RIDC) supported by the São State Foundation (Fapesp). The study will evaluate various aspects, including the surface properties (roughness and surface energy) of the experimental materials, antimicrobial activity in biofilm models of Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, as well as biocompatibility in a 3D organotypic model of oral mucosa in vitro. It is expected that this project will result in the development of a new low-cost, biocompatible resin with antimicrobial properties for the production of implant-supported denture bases using 3D printing through stereolithography. | |
