"Biopolymer Films based on Amphiphilic Derivatives of Chitosan as Antimicrobial Agents: Applications and Mode of Action"

Abstract

This research project aims at the development of an antimicrobial agent for the preservation of grains, fruits and nuts, contributing to improve the competitiveness of Brazilian agribusiness, regarding the aspects of food safety and quality, with possible application on the conservation of commodities of high importance to the Brazilian trade balance. The proposal is grounded on an amphiphilic biofungicide (Patent No BR102012023859) based on the polysaccharide chitosan. The project focuses on optimizing the composition with minimal modifications to improve its antimicrobial activity while maintaining the biocompatibility and non-toxic character. The project has the collaboration of EMBRAPA instrumentation. The design involves steps of synthesis and characterization, in vitro tests against microorganisms, as well as the preparation and characterization of films for use in grains, fruits and nuts. The studies will focus on microorganisms that impact the conservation of internal trade products as well as those intended for foreign trade. (AU)
