Abstract

The urban transformations that the city of São Paulo underwent in the second half of the 19th century are marked by the actions of a business community in the urban promotion of the city, which resulted in its expansion beyond its forming triangle. This urban promotion carried out by the business community, driven by the Land Law of 1850 and which results in a movement in the civil construction market, is combined with technical knowledge in order to attract potential buyers and sell their projects based on their modernizing character to city. Within this role of urban promoters is the figure of Joaquim Eugênio de Lima (JEL), a Uruguayan-Brazilian known in urban historiography for being responsible for creating Avenida Paulista. From his circulation in European territory for his studies in agronomy, JEL came into contact with the debates about urbanism that were taking place in Europe at the time and with technical knowledge, mobilizing them for his work in urban promotion in São Paulo in order to gain notoriety within the social cycle he frequented and bring a distinctive character to his ventures. This articulation with technical knowledge occurs mainly with French people, expressed in the figure of Paul Villon, responsible for the Parque Villon project, currently Parque Tenente Siqueira Campos, located on Avenida Paulista, and Jules Martin, who will work alongside JEL in the promoting his projects in the city, such as creating a painting to celebrate the inauguration of Avenida Paulista, and as his partner in Companhia Viaducto do Chá, responsible for creating the Viaduto do Chá. Thus, this Research Internship Abroad (BEPE) project, which will be developed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Angelo Bertoni, at the Université de Strasbourg, in France, aims to understand and identify the connections between urban knowledge between Brazil and France expressed by JEL's relationship with French technical labor, in order to understand it as one of the agents urban history and transnational intellectual history that articulates knowledge about urbanism, landscaping and urban improvements for the city of São Paulo.
