Abstract

Exposure to pesticides has been studied for causing different health problems, however, little is known about the effects of the more than a thousand pesticides currently in use, especially with regard to the cardiovascular impairment caused by them. Although acceptable limits of pesticide residues in food are established, such limits are established considering healthy organisms. Cancer is the second cause of morbidity and mortality in the world and the life expectancy of patients affected by it has increased, with nutritional aspects widely addressed as allies of different therapies. The chemotherapy drug Doxorubicin is one of the most used treatments around the world, despite its recognized cardiotoxicity. Thus, it can be speculated that the consumption of food contaminated with pesticide residues, even within the limits established by law, can have serious consequences in a myocardium already weakened by chemotherapy. In this project, we propose to establish the no observed adverse effect level - NOAEL of the heart for pesticides glyphosate (sales leader in Brazil and worldwide) and cypermethrin (one of the ten pesticides that most exceeded the residue limit in food in Brazil). Afterwards, we intend to evaluate the effects of the established dose in organisms already weakened by the cardiotoxicity induced by doxorubicin. (AU)
