Abstract

The Santa Catarina coast has open coastal environments as well as bays and estuarine systems, all with large population occupation and considerable vulnerability to coastal flooding. This context received special attention from EPAGRI/CIRAM through the implementation of a network of tide gauge stations for sea level monitoring. This study proposal aims to analyze observations from the point of view of the occurrence of low-frequency oscillations in sea level, called storm surges. The aim is to evaluate the distributions of events in terms of their intensities and times of occurrence, as well as associating them with the determining meteorological conditions. Another relevant aspect refers to the simultaneity of recent measurements, which allows case studies to be carried out on the attenuation effects and/or time lag of the most significant occurrences.
