Abstract

The presented research proposes an interpretation of Coronel Paulino Carlos State School in São Carlos-SP as a Cultural Heritage, using different representation languages. The school was inaugurated in 1905 in a building designed by José van Humbeeck, and is part of the implementation of a public basic education system by the São Paulo government during the 1st Republic (1889-1930). The listing by CONDEPHAAT of the set of 126 schools of which the School is a part is supported only by cognitive and formal values (technical values), not considering affective, pragmatic and ethical values (social values), which are also components of cultural value. Therefore, the general objective of the research is to demonstrate, through a case study based on the Coronel Paulino Carlos State School, the indissociability of the material and immaterial dimensions for the interpretation of an object as Cultural Heritage. It is hypothesized that the values contained in the heritage process via the School's listing do not represent all of its values, especially those attributed by people directly involved with the heritage and who are not heritage technicians. The research consists of a case study with combined strategies, being, in general, qualitative, since it aims to explain a social phenomenon in a complex and contemporary context - the E.E. Cel. Paulino Carlos as Heritage in the present time - and it is structured in 4 moments. In the 1st moment, a bibliographic review will be developed to establish the trajectory of the field of Cultural Heritage in Brazil. In the 2nd, knowledge about the school will be constructed considering cognitive and formal values through historical research and the architectural Rilievo process. In the 3rd, knowledge about the school will be constructed considering cognitive, formal, affective, pragmatic and ethical values through action research. In the 4th moment, analyzes of the results will be built. With these analyses, it is expected to prove the hypothesis, establishing the architectural materiality as an interface for experiences and experiences.
