Abstract

Focusing on the Captaincy of Piauí and its transition to a Province, this research project seeks to respond to the motivations that led to the change of the capital from Oeiras to Teresina (formerly Vila Nova do Poty), focusing on economic dynamics and political disputes, in through the logic of circulation in the landscape. As methodological procedures, a game of interdependent scales (macro territorial, regional and intra-urban) will be chosen, seeking to empirically demonstrate the strategic role of Piauí between the Sertões do Norte, Maranhão and the Amazon, as well as the changes in the policy of urbanization from the colony to the Empire and the motivations that led to the movement between capitals. With the aim of strengthening the research that has already been carried out in the country, we requested this external research internship, at CHAM - Centro de Humanidades affiliated to Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in Portugal, to sum up the materials cataloged to date, seeking to bring unprecedented sources for understanding this topic, which can still be considered a gap within the field of the history of urbanization and urbanism.
