Abstract

The second half of the 18th century marked profound social, territorial and economic changes in the Porto Seguro region with the Pombaline policies. Several villages were created and renovated, their economy dynamized and the indigenous populations inserted into the colonial substrate. The main village of Porto Seguro, territory chosen by the author in her master's dissertation (2022), was reconfigured in its structure, as well as in the architecture of its institutional and residential buildings. However, such renovations were not enough to meet the upcoming demands of the village, which, with the economic dynamism achieved at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century, needed to move to the lower city. These elements justify the spatial and temporal cut proposed for this research, which aims to continue the abovementioned study. In line with the works oriented by Beatriz Bueno in Archeology of Landscape, this research aims to analyze the cultural landscape of the lower city of Porto Seguro at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century, a period in which port activities were enhanced and the city begun to be constituted from these relations, that is, as a port city. The analysis will take place at three scales: landscape, urbanization and intra-urban, with the objective of scrutinizing and spatializing its natural and anthropic characteristics, social and commercial networks, mobility logics and its position in the local urban network, regional and colony, in addition to the influence of port relations on the urban materiality of the city itself. Furthermore, in the cultural landscape key, this research proposes to dialogue with recent studies that are placing the South of Bahia in the national scenario as a landscape, in addition to contributing to the historiographical production of the city of Porto Seguro beyond the representations stereotyped with the advent of the "Discovery".
