Abstract

Faced with the challenges and impacts imposed by the global SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, rural communities have adopted different strategies to resist it, many of which have involved collective actions, such as closing accesses, distancing measures, and others. In the Amazon, poorly structured cities and long geographical distances have aggravated the situation of populations living on the banks of long rivers, including those living in Extractive Reserves (RESEX). In addition, the health challenges of the pandemic, the political context of the dismantling of environmental policies, the encouragement of activities such as illegal mining, and the threat of a review of the areas of Conservation Units in the country form an overall image of threats to the communities living in Extractive Reserves. In this sense, the research will analyze whether the collective actions that were at the genesis of the Rio Iriri RESEX, in Altamira (PA), in the Eastern Amazon, have been adjusted to the resistance of communities in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project is part of the research project "FORTE - FORest ciTizenship for disaster rEsilience: learning from COVID-19", funded by FAPESP (Brazil), the Economic, and Social Research Council (UK) and the National Science Foundation (USA). This project is a qualitative case study, and the fieldwork will be carried out in the Rio Iriri RESEX. Primary and secondary data will be used, from interviews, bibliography, documents, and journalistic materials, among other sources. The data will be analyzed using Reflective Thematic Analysis.
