Abstract

Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity are associated with an increased risk of frailty, falls, fractures, hospitalizations and functional disability, considerably increasing the direct health costs of older people. Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) and phase angle (PhA), which have been used as parameters to evaluate cellular integrity in different clinical scenarios and are associated with several health outcomes, may be relevant in the investigation of sarcopenia and obesity sarcopenic diseases, as well as identifying population differences. Therefore, the objective of the present study will be to compare the bioelectrical impedance parameters (PhA and BIVA) among older adults with sarcopenia or sarcopenic obesity from different geographic regions. The present study is part of the national multicenter studies BIA Brasil and international "The International Bioimpedance Analysis Database", and will have a cross-sectional design. Adults with sarcopenia or sarcopenic obesity of both sexes aged 60 years or over will be included in the sample. The variables investigated will be: (i) bioelectrical impedance parameters (PhA and BIVA), body composition and hydration status (bioelectrical impedance); ii) handgrip strength (dynamometer); and iii) sociodemographic variables: sex, age, ethnicity, and geographic location.
