Abstract

The fluorescence-aided identification (FIT) technique has been proposed to assist in the removal of composite veneers; however, aging of restorative material can negatively interfere with this technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two composite resin aging protocols on the removal of posterior restorations using FIT. Sixty bovine incisors will be selected and divided into 6 groups according to type of artificial aging (absent - A; pigmentation with soluble coffee - P; exposure to cigarette smoke - C) and removal method (conventional - CON or FIT). Buccal surface of tooth crowns will be planned and scanned (T0). Cavities measuring 4x4mm with depth of 0.5 mm will be created, followed by another scanning (T1). The restorations will be performed using an adhesive system and composite resin. They will then be pigmented with soluble coffee for 12 days or exposed to cigarette smoke for 5 days. The composite resin restorations will be removed by another operator and then the specimens will be scanned again (T2). Areas of tooth wear, areas of composite resin residue and the average between additional wear and presence of resin residue between T2 and T1 will be evaluated. The data will be subjected to the statistical test of normality and homogeneity and analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-test (p<0.05).
