Abstract

This research project aims to understand, through the analysis of the CPI of Piracy carried out by the São Paulo City Council, the representations, disputes, and discourses about the market for counterfeit products. Advancing in understanding the tensions around divergent ways of perceiving the counterfeit market will allow us to analyze the affinities between state institutions and large companies in the actions to combat piracy as well as their effects on the control of popular economic practices. Methodologically, the investigation will be carried out from the in-depth analysis of the shorthand notes, videos, and documents presented to the CPI, as well as the survey of news about the production, trade, and actions to combat piracy. The research will draw on the existing literature in the Social Sciences on popular economies and the theme of piracy to analyze the discourses, representations, and emerging conflicts in the CPI, understanding them in relation to economic disputes around contested markets. In addition, with focus on the CPI and the highlighted issues, the research will also contribute to development of the project "Tecendo Mercados: uma jornada por circuitos informais de confecção e a gestão empresarial dos mercados populares", to which it will be linked, collaborating with the collection and analysis of secondary data and bibliography about informalities and the clothing industry in Brazil, and with the production of empirical material.
