Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) ultracold gases are produced from three-dimensional (3D) gases strongly confined in one direction of space. Therefore, optimizing the experimental sequence until the achievement of a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate is important to achieve large atom numbers when entering the 2D regime. Fast and efficient production of Bose- Einstein condensates of potassium-39 can be achieved using only optical means [1], with the sub-doppler cooled atoms from a gray molasses being directly loaded into an optical dipole trap. Following this approach, this scientific initiation project will be devoted to the design and construction of a deep crossed optical dipole trap with large capture volume optimizing the mode-match with the molasses atomic cloud.
