Venezuelan Immigrant Mothers in the Municipality of São Paulo: A Comparative Analysis with Brazilian Mothers

Abstract

Introduction: Migration has emerged as a pressing global issue with significant implications for access to healthcare. The increasing influx of Venezuelan immigrants to São Paulo in recent years has resulted in a shift in the profile of live births from immigrant mothers. These mothers face a range of challenges, including economic difficulties, inadequate housing, and limited access to social and healthcare services. Objective: To identify whether there are differences in the characteristics of pregnancy, childbirth, and live births between Venezuelan immigrant women and Brazilian women in the Municipality of São Paulo (MSP) from 2012 to 2022. Methods: A descriptive study will be conducted using secondary data on live births in the MSP from the Information System on Live Births (SINASC). The following variables will be analyzed: age, education, marital status, parity, history of fetal loss or previous abortion, type of pregnancy, type of delivery, month of prenatal care initiation, number of prenatal visits, gestational age, birth weight, 1-minute Apgar score, place of birth, and type of birthing hospital. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics, including the calculation of distribution and central tendency measures, and the use of Pearson's chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and ANOVA.
