Abstract

The global prevalence of obesity has increased substantially in recent years. Its pathophysiology is complex and multifactorial, with the cause most attributed to its genesis being the imbalance between caloric intake and permanent and prolonged energy expenditure. However, recent evidence adds that the intestinal microbiota (IM) is a potentiating factor for the development of obesity, since IM modulates host metabolism, affecting not only energy balance, but also intestinal barrier function and inflammation. low-grade chronic systemic disease. Therefore, proposing strategies capable of promoting its modulation and, consequently, reducing low-grade chronic systemic inflammation, may be relevant in the prevention and/or treatment of obesity. The objective of the present study will be to evaluate the effect of probiotic supplementation and calorie restriction on testosterone metabolism and hypogonadism in men living with obesity. It will be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of two parallel groups in young adult individuals with grade I obesity. The sample will consist of 40 people to evaluate testosterone metabolism. The intervention period will be 12 weeks of probiotic supplementation or placebo associated with calorie restriction. All assessments will be carried out at baseline, after 4, 8 and 12 weeks. However, for this project, only the initial and 12-week assessments will be considered. Statistical analysis will be carried out according to the behavior of the data, using parametric and non-parametric tests when appropriate. Therefore, we will use time and group analyses, correlations, as well as regression models to understand the results found, considering pd0.05 and effect size. We believe that the association between calorie restriction and probiotic supplementation can, by improving the composition of the intestinal microbiota and reducing intestinal permeability, reduce systemic inflammatory markers and, therefore, enhance the reduction of adipose tissue. Finally, probiotic supplementation associated with calorie restriction will improve body composition and consequently testosterone metabolism and the quality of life of these individuals.
