Abstract It is well known that malignant tumors exhibit an altered pattern of gene expression, with several genes being overexpressed or underexpressed. Our group and others have identified expressed retrocopies capable of regulating the expression of their parental protein-coding genes or genes neighboring the insertion site. Here, we hypothesize that retrocopies without a known function may play a functional role in tumors. In this project, we will systematically identify and analyze fixed and polymorphic retrocopies (restricted to humans) with altered functional characteristics in tumors. Specifically, we will analyze those retrocopies that are transcribed differently, forming gene chimeras, undergoing mutations, or potentially disrupting the genomic regions in which they are inserted. Overall, the aim is to identify specific or significantly altered phenomena in tumors. | |
