Abstract

The management of urban solid waste and domestic sewage is a constant and necessary concern from the perspective of overall health, altering the healthy balance among humans, animals, and the environment. In this context, the pursuit of continuous improvements in the management system of these wastes is of utmost relevance. Composting has been used as successful alternatives in this regard. Studies have been proposed to use waste as raw material for the production of organic fertilizers, including both the organic fraction of solid waste and sludge from urban sewage treatment plants (STPs). However, several authors have reported that effluents from STPs and landfills are significant sources of dissemination of multidrug-resistant bacteria into the environment. A major concern in this regard is enterobacteria widely distributed in these organic materials. These bacteria can potentially be pathogenic to humans and animals and resistant to various antimicrobials due to different factors. Among them, metallo-²-lactamases (MBLs) stand out, which are enzymes that can be produced by bacteria, capable of inactivating a wide variety of antibiotic. Therefore, evaluating the biosafety of biofertilizers is essential to prevent them from becoming carriers of pathogens, especially multidrug-resistant bacteria. In this sense, the present proposal aims to analyze the antimicrobial resistance profile and MBL production in enterobacteria isolated from compost prepared from urban solid waste and domestic sewage, through its utilization as biofertilizers.
