Abstract

The aim of this project is to offer a philological commentary on Ovid's epistolary elegies Tr. 5. and 5.14. I seek that, as a result of the aimed research, this Ovidian work serves as a means for academic research and the training of students interested not only in the exile of the poet Ovid - the central theme of this project - but also in practical and theoretical issues that concern the philological work. These elegies that open and close the fifth and last book of the Tristia - the first collection of poems of the Ovidian exile - allow us to address key concepts for the understanding of poetic making, such as those of "auctor", "vates", "poetic authority", "textual organization" and "dispositio" of the pieces in the corpus. The detailed commentary aims to discuss issues relevant to Ovid's entire oeuvre, such as metrics and the rhetorical resources he uses, as well as to expose the poet's abilities to play with mimetic syntax and detect the intertextual allusions proposed in the text that allow a better understanding of its meaning. Moreover, the commentary proposes itself as a pedagogical tool to be used in the teaching of the Latin language and literature. Furthermore, Ovid's exile work is seldom studied in the classroom, even in advanced stages of academic training. This project intends to postulate the importance that the study of Ovid's exile poetry and the epistemological reflection on the philological praxis have to offer.
