Abstract

The performance of surfaces undergoing boiling heat transfer is widely evaluated through its boiling curve, which plots the dissipated heat flux (q ") against the difference between wall temperature and the saturation temperature of the fluid, called wall superheat (”Tsat). This work aims to evaluate the influence of diverse operational conditions and material properties in pool boiling experimental results for smooth surfaces. This analysis will be carried out through the survey of literature data on pool boiling over smooth surfaces and the conduction of experiments with samples fabricated using distinct materials and varying experimental conditions such as the working pressure, degree of subcooling, dissipated heat flux, heating rate, and footprint area, and the aging performance of surfaces will also be assessed. Algorithms to evaluate the raw data and transform it into meaningful results will be developed in MatLab, and the data survey from the literature will be conducted with the software PlotDigitizer, so the boiling curves and heat transfer coefficients assessed during this work can be compared with previously published data. The heat transfer surfaces will be characterized regarding their profiles and wettability through confocal microscopy and in a contact angle analyzer.
