Abstract

This Project aims to collect, edit and publish the whole known Works by Afro-Luso-Brazilian poet Domingos Caldas Barbosa (1740-1800). Some critics consider Caldas Barbosa the precursor or Afro-Brazilian poetry. He greatly contributed to popular culture (his more studied output), as well as to erudite poetry (a less known side of his writing). There are many conflicting appraisals of Caldas Barbosa works, due exactly to the lack of a comprehensive and reliable edition of his works. For more than two hundred yeas, only one work was actually accessible, the collections of modinhas entitled Viola de Lereno, from 1798, but there has been no reissuing of it since 1980. The inexistence of accessible editions kept great part of Caldas Barbosa's output, including his entirely theatre work, aside of the intellectual debate. Recent challenges of the official canon of Brazilian literature have questioned some European white models, and included different voices. With this edition and its critical introduction, I believe that it will be possible to correct some prejudices and actively contribute with the debate.
