Abstract

The aim of this application is to develop the research project entitled "In search of sugar improvement: intersections between Bahia and Cuba in the mid-19th century". Linked to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), this proposal will be supervised by Professor Leida Fernández Prieto, one of the leading specialists in studies on the History of Science and the History of Agriculture in Cuba. It is understood that the internship will make it possible to internationalize the research, through dialogue with foreign researchers; access to specialized bibliography at the CSIC's Tomás Navarro Tomás Library; as well as access to documentation from the Spanish Consulate in Bahia, held by the Archivo General de la Administración. Further studies into the intersections and specificities between Bahian and Cuban sugar production in the mid-19th century will contribute to the consolidation of one of the main objectives of the project proposed and under development in Brazil, which is to understand the economy of Bahia in the 19th century, as well as the actions of Bahian politicians in the face of the province's economic situation in the period, within a broader national and international scenari.
