Abstract

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is an aromatic species that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Patchouli essential oil is used commercially in the perfumery, cosmetics, and aromatherapy industries around the world. The main compound for this characteristic and the typical note of its essential oil is patchoulol or patchouli alcohol. In addition to being used in cosmetics, it is used as an antidepressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent and fungicide. The plant is cultivated in several countries, but the geographic location is an important factor and directly affects the chemical composition and development process of the medicinal plant. Thus, plant biotechnology techniques such as "in vitro plant culture" are attractive. Therefore, this research project aims to cultivate patchouli in vitro and compare the removal of patchouli oil and its main active ingredient (patchoulol) using an environmentally friendly solvent.
