Abstract

This project was born out of a theoretical, conceptual and methodological effort aimed at building a geographical theory of the social movements that dispute and produce the most varied spaces and territories in the Brazilian and Argentine urban context. The main thesis behind this construction is based on the existence of a set of readings on social movements that detail and sideline space and territory. In this sense, what are the spaces and territories disputed by urban social movements today? What are the mechanisms, strategies and methodologies (i.e. types of action) used to achieve a certain goal? Is there a certain pattern, behaviour and relationship between the types of movements, their objectives and the methodologies employed by these organized subjects aiming to conquer space and territory? Are the movements producing new meanings and readings of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals? These are some of the questions that instigate me to deepen the debate on urban socio-spatial and socio-territorial movements. The aim of this project is to evaluate the concept of socio-spatial and socio-territorial movements, identifying whether or not there is a relationship between the objectives, concepts and meanings produced by the movements and the typologies of actions triggered during the disputes carried out by these organized subjects. It is in this sense that the exercise of comparing urban movements operating in São Paulo (Brazil) and Buenos Aires (Argentina) - a Latin American context marked by a varied set of political, economic and social instabilities - makes it possible to deepen the following hypothesis: socio-spatial movements (which triumph from space) and socio-territorial movements (which triumph from territory) weave a set of typologies of actions (spatial typologies) that are oriented by the dispute over space or territory, their strategies and objectives, in turn, produce the spatial and territorial identity of these movements (spatialities and territorialities), as well as constructing a new sense, meaning and concept of the city. When discussing the typologies of actions constructed by the movements, it is important to highlight the action of socio-territorial movements as an analytical category whose central objective is the mediation of space and the appropriation of territory. Contrasting the concepts of socio-territorial movements, socio-spatial movements and social movements in four axes of analysis is an essential task: 1) understanding how space and territory are produced as a central strategy for achieving the objectives of a given movement; 2) identifying how spaces and territories produce the identities of movements and generate new political subjectivities; 3) evaluating in a comparative perspective, space and territory as places of socialization that weave and produce new values and alter conjunctures in the Latin American context; 4) understanding whether through the processes of territorialization, deterritorialization and reterritorialization, movements create new institutions.
