Abstract

This doctoral project investigates the phenomenon of Long Range Ordering (LRO) and Short Range Chemical Disorder in CoCrNi alloys with variations in Co content. The project aims to explore the prevailing hypothesis that Chemical Short Range Ordering (CSRO) is a precursor to LRO. As will be shown, pseudo-binary phase diagrams indicate that CoCrNi alloy, prone to CSRO, does not develop LRO, contrary to the expected trend, suggesting a complex interplay between these two types of atomic ordering. Using a combination of experimental techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), the study aims to understand the formation of ordered phases in Cr33Ni66-xCox alloys (x=0, 2, 8, 17.5, and 33). To complement experimental techniques, Molecular Dynamics simulations coupled with Monte Carlo method (MC-MD), using Neural Network Potentials (NNP), will enable the identification and understanding of local structures. This study expands the understanding of characterization techniques and simulation of multi-principal element alloys, contributing to understanding how to identify and characterize local arrangements in simple solid solutions. The results will be important for attempting to understand the real effect of these arrangements on various properties.
