Abstract

For over a century we have tried to explain how the classical world can emerge from the mathematical formalism and experimentally observed physical effects of quantum mechanics. Although many different proposals have been put forward, a satisfactory framework for this quantum-to-classical transition is still lacking. Two of the aspects of classical theories that seem to be missing in quantum physics are noncontextuality and objectivity. Using recent developments in the area of quantum foundations, we aim to investigate how these effects emerge in physically motivated quantum systems and how they might be used to achieve quantum advantage in thermodynamic processes and relevant resource theories.
