Abstract

Apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammatory response resulting from bacterial infection of the root canals, which, over time, can cause bone destruction of the periapical tissues. Studies have demonstrated the potential of AP to exacerbate systemic inflammatory responses, especially in the presence of multiple foci of infection. The objective of this study is to analyze different blood parameters depending on the time of AP development. 32 male Wistar rats will be used, divided into 4 groups (n=8): G1 (Control Group), G2 (7-day AP), G3 (14-day AP) and G4 (28-day AP). AP will be induced by exposing the upper and lower first and second molars on the right side. After the experimental periods, the animals will be euthanized and blood collected through cardiac puncture. The (I) Erythrogram parameters will be observed: Red blood cells (x106/µL), Hemoglobin (g/dL), Hematocrit (%), Mean corpuscular volume (fL), Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (%), Erythrocyte size (% ), Platelet count (x103/µL) and Total plasma protein (g/dL); (II) Leukogram: Leukocytes (cells/µL), Neutrophils (cells/µL), Lymphocytes (cells/µL), Eosinophils (cells/µL), Rods (cells/µL) and Monocytes (cells/µL); and (III) Oxidative Stress: Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), Total oxidant concentration (TOC) and Lipid peroxidation (Tbars). The results will be analyzed using specific statistical tests for each case with a significance level of 5% (p<0.05).
