Abstract

Plastic is a material widely used in contemporary society, consequently, due to mass production, inadequate management and disposal, this material has become ubiquitous in the environment, thus creating a challenge for the planet, society and the global economy. There is growing concern about the effects resulting from the interaction between microplastics (plastic particles smaller than 5 mm) and organic pollutants such as insects on non-target organisms. In the literature, data on the possible interactions (synergistic/antagonistic) of these mixtures are still divergent and scarce. Among contaminants, insecticides are chemical or biological substances widely used to control pests and vectors that are harmful to agriculture, public health and the domestic environment. The fish Danio rerio (zebrafish) is a representative model widely used in toxicology studies due to its similarities to higher vertebrates. This project aims to evaluate the effects of MPs on the toxicity of three insecticides commonly used in the control of vector insects and in veterinary treatments: diflubenzuron (DFB), pyriproxyfen (PPF), and fipronil (FP). Analyses related to the identification of histopathological alterations in the brain, liver, gills, and gonads will be conducted, as well as their possible action as endocrine disruptors, their impact on behavior, and the embryonic development of zebrafish. The generated data have a multidisciplinary nature and will contribute to the understanding of the effects of interactions between mixtures of environmental contaminants, assisting in risk assessment for the protection of non-target species.
