Abstract

Sun protection is essential for preventing skin cancer, as the main risk factor is prolonged and repeated exposure to UV radiation, which causes burns, damage to DNA and generates free radicals that, in excess, cause oxidative stress, which causes cancer and skin aging. Sunscreens protect the skin from solar radiation through ultraviolet filters that can be mineral, synthetic or natural, with a tendency to use natural active ingredients. Antioxidants in the formulation can contribute to protection against UV radiation and, mainly, against free radicals. Tocotrienols are natural antioxidants with proven activity. Therefore, the development of antioxidant photoprotectors to prevent damage caused by solar radiation is essential. Thus, this project aims to develop a photoprotective and antioxidant cosmetic formulation using the enriched- 70% tocotrienol fraction f as active ingredient, a by-product of the production of bixin from Bixa orellana L. This multifunctional cosmetic will be developed to prevent the effects of UV radiation and reduce the industrial impacts of this process.
