Abstract

The project proposes to address two ritualistic musical manifestations, the batuque of umbigada in the Médio Tietê region of São Paulo and the chamamé Correntino, from the northeast coast of Argentina, respectively Afro-Brazilian and indigenous Guarani knowledge, as musical constructions of places based on the articulation of three aspects: heritage, memory and spirituality. Due to the nature of this study, we opted for a qualitative approach methodology that involves analysis of documentary, visual, sound sources and notes made in the field notebook, observation with and without participation, experimental and participant listening, audio-ethnographies, observation of performances and performative ethnography and individual and collective interviews. It is important to add that we work on the idea of music as a geographic object, therefore, we look for the spatiality of music itself and how it can be conceived as a source of information about space. The fieldwork covers four cities in São Paulo (Capivari, Tietê, Piracicaba and Rio Claro) and six in the province of Corrientes (Corrientes capital, San Cosme, Mburucuyá, Mercedes, Curuzú Cuatiá and Alvear) and includes the creation of psychogeography routes and the application of four multi-located ethnographic procedures, three inspired by the proposal of George Emanuel Marcus (1995) and one by Lucas Manassi Panitz (2017). The research problem is configured based on the articulation of the three concepts, and seeks to answer how they participate in the musical construction of places. Especially with regard to heritage, given that in the case of chamamé it has already been established and declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), while the batuque de umbigada is the possibility of the safeguarding process.
