Abstract

3D printing of bone scaffolds produced from starch gels and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles has been reported in the literature. Despite showing structural similarity to biological apatite, synthetic hydroxyapatite does not present its bioactivity, since biological apatite presents trace elements that play a key role in the bone remodeling process. More specifically, nanoparticles of hydroxyapatite doped with cobalt and gallium ions have been associated with regulating bone formation and resorption processes. Therefore, this project aims to evaluate the effect of these ions in hydroxyapatite nanoparticles on the functional and active properties of bone scaffolds (based on starch gels) produced via 3D printing. The properties evaluated will be mechanical, swelling, biodegradability, in vitro bioactivity, cell viability, mineralization capacity, and evaluation of ion release. Finally, this study will make it possible to understand how much cobalt and gallium ions can cooperate in the properties of bone scaffolds based on starch gels produced via 3D printing.
