Abstract

Academic genealogy has gained prominence in revealing the intellectual interconnections among researchers and their impact on advancing knowledge. Through the analysis of genealogy graphs, it is possible to identify patterns of collaboration, academic influence, and idea dissemination. However, it is important to recognize the presence of outliers, observations that notably stand out from the common characteristics of the network, indicating exceptional cases, graph construction errors, and potentially valuable insights into the evolution of research and science. In this context, this project aims to detect and interpret outliers in academic genealogy graphs, using the LookOut method and data collected from the Acácia platform, which contains extensive academic genealogy information. This approach will allow us to understand the unusual relationships between mentors and their mentees, as well as investigate the impact of these outliers on academic genealogy and the scientific community as a whole.
