Abstract

Introduction: The maternal experience of caring for a child exposed to Treponema Pallidum during pregnancy/birth involves previous processes linked to the diagnosis of gestational syphilis and its treatment, the challenges of parenthood and interaction with social conceptions associated with syphilis. Hope is a vital force in coping with complex situations in the health-disease process and its consideration is indicated in health and nursing care. This proposal aims to advance and contribute to existing knowledge in the area of hope and parenting, and to introduce the discussion in the context of congenital syphilis. Objective: To characterise the process of hope of women mothers in caring for their children exposed to Treponema Pallidum during pregnancy/birth. Method: This is a qualitative, interpretative study with women who meet the following inclusion criteria: having been diagnosed with syphilis during pregnancy; being over 18 years old; having a child born alive and having been recommended to be followed up by a specialised outpatient clinic due to exposure to Treponema Pallidum during pregnancy or at birth. The data collection strategy will be semi-structured interviews, and the criterion of data sufficiency will be used to determine the end of data collection. The empirical material will be analysed using Clarke and Braun's thematic analysis.
