Abstract

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a chronic and progressive condition caracterized by the narrowing or occlusion of the arteries that supply the lower limbs, caused by the formation of cholesterol plaques in the extremities of these vessels, thereby reducing their lumen. This results in decreased distal blood flow, causing intermittent claudication, resting pain, and trophic lesions. Recent studies suggest that the manifestation of peripheral arterial disease as a precursor condition is a risk factor for the occurrence of cardiovascular events. Among these events, it is possible to mention acute myocardial infarction (AMI), stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), angina, and death. However, there are still few published studies that relate the aforementioned cardiovascular events as possible outcomes resulting from peripheral arterial disease. Therefore, we propose a systematic literature review (with possible meta-analysis) to investigate the cardiovascular impacts of peripheral arterial disease. Keywords: peripheral arterial disease; cardiovascular events; acute myocardial infarction; stroke; transient ischemic attack.
