Abstract

This research aims to analyze the integration and fixation of Erwin Panofsky's historical-artistic perspectives in English, reconstructing the textual dynamics of writing, rewriting, and translation processes of his texts. It starts from the hypothesis that Panofsky's work is fundamentally based on a dynamic of rewriting and reappropriations of previous writings, generating its own textual itineraries that do not straightforwardly correspond to a German phase and an American phase, as commonly identified in historiography. Thus, the research intends to undertake a dual analysis of Panofsky's intellectual production, contrasting the textual appropriations made by him with those made by others during the course of their translations. The research will pursue its objective through two strategies: an analysis of the translations and reformulations of previous texts carried out by Panofsky himself in the composition of two of his major works, Studies in Iconology (1939) and Meaning in the Visual Arts (1955), and an analysis of translations and paratexts carried out without his direct interference, considering the interpretative and editorial dynamics contained within them. In this way, the research aims to contribute to debates on the creation and dissemination of historical-artistic texts, in order to deepen the understanding of the dynamics of intellectual production in the field.
