Abstract

Newsreels have a notorious importance as genres of social circulation of information throughout the 20th century. These audiovisual materials, when circulating in different media and supports, have a strong impact on events within a historical narrative and as a guideline for social memory, serving as a visual support for memory and the narrated meaning of historical processes. In many cases, events still in process, without a constituted narrative framework, are captured in audiovisual format and conveyed by the media, which can change the course of the historical process itself. These assumptions will serve as a basis for analyzing the representations of the political crisis of the João Goulart government and the 1964 coup d'état in the Brazilian newsreels, which were widely circulated during the period of events.
