Abstract

This master's project proposes to research labor relations in the Paranapanema hinterland region between 1883 and 1909, a period of intense changes and unrest in Brazil, marked mainly by Abolition and the Proclamation of the Republic. At the same time, there was the emergence of cities west of São Paulo, motivated by the expansion of coffee. The trend expanded to the extreme western region of the state at the beginning of the 20th century, the period covered by the research. Late colonized, the region is located on the border of areas populated at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, and experienced little of the slave production system, as it was only in the 20th century that it was integrated into the São Paulo coffee economy, so that the The location differed from the large cities of the period due to this specificity. Because of this, the research proposes, through comparison with other national and international scenarios, the understanding of labor relations in the hinterland of Paranapanema, during the period of installation of the free labor regime in Brazil.
