Abstract

NTRODUCTION: Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a growing concern in Brazil and worldwide, as they represent the most significant health problem. The occurrence of more than one NCD is known as multimorbidity, which affects quality of life, increases the risk of hospitalization, and these situations are exacerbated by the number of associated diseases. Social factors and lifestyle habits, such as physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and poor diet, are recognized as responsible for the development and worsening of these diseases. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the social and lifestyle factors associated with multimorbidity in Brazilian adults and elderly individuals using data from VIGITEL 2023. METHODS: This cross-sectional study will use data and information from the VIGITEL survey for the year 2023. Multimorbidity will be defined as the presence of 2 or more NCDs. Social and lifestyle factors such as sociodemographic conditions, sex, age, race, and lifestyle habits, including excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and physical inactivity, will be considered potential risk factors, while the consumption of minimally processed foods, beans, vegetables, and physical activity will be considered protective factors. DATA ANALYSIS: Statistical analyses will include Pearson's chi-square test and logistic regression models to assess the association between the prevalence of multimorbidity and social and lifestyle factors. All analyses will be performed using Stata® statistical software, considering a significance level of 5% and the survey's sampling complexity. In this way, the study aims to identify the main social and lifestyle factors associated with multimorbidity in Brazilian adults, understand the differentiation between adults and the elderly, and the differentiation of these markers in the 26 capitals and the Federal District.
