Abstract

The project analyzes the relations between metropolitan agents and local power in Portuguese America at the end of the XVIIth century and the beginning of the XVIIIth. This period had strong international conflicts which impacted deeply Portugal's politics over Brazil. Furthermore, the local elites lead political transformations - including loyalty demonstrations, claims and revolts - by the intense use of the grace logic and the paradigma jurisdicionalista, just like the royal agents. The Emboabas War (1708-1709), the nomination of São Paulo as a city (1679-1711) and the Vila Rica revolt (1720) are the main historical events to be pursued in parallel.
