Associated to the scholarship: | 23/03181-8 - Dendrochronology applied to small plants from natural grasslands: dating and reconstruction of small plant growth and the influence of ecological and climatic variables., BP.IC |
Abstract Determining the age of small perennial plants through dendrochronology, which analyzes growth rings in xylem tissue, is challenging but crucial for understanding population structures, especially in tropical regions, where it can reveal rapid responses to climatic fluctuations. Natural grasslands, predominantly characterized by grasses, forbs, subshrubs and shrubs, face environmental factors and disturbances that shape their vegetation structure, impacting various ecological processes. This project aims at systematically examine the anatomical features of woody underground structures in three subshrub species (Jacaranda decurrens Cham.; Lippia lupulina Cham.; Mandevilla longiflora (Desf.) Pichon), to provide a reliable means of characterizing structural properties and growth ring characteristics of these plant species, for dendrochronological analysis. Histochemical tests are invaluable tools for precise chemical identification within biological tissues and will address knowledge gaps in the anatomy and histochemistry of subshrub species in grasslands, enriching herb-chronology research in Brazil. This research project involves the preparation of material and the assembly of histological slides to ensure a suitable foundation for further analyses. The high-quality imaging of both histological and histochemical slides provides a visual perspective on the analyzed materials. Finally, detailed anatomical descriptions and measurements, supported by a comprehensive analysis of the obtained results, will allow elucidating the anatomy, functioning, age and ecological significance of the peculiar underground structures of these small plant species. The Research Internship Abroad (Bolsa Estágio de Pesquisa no Exterior - BEPE) at Cirad (International Center for Agronomic Research and Development) can provide a valuable contribution to the subproject of dendrochronology applied to small plants in natural grasslands, linked to the Thematic Project "Natural Grasslands of the State of São Paulo: Diagnosis, Management, and Conservation." | |
